I originally wanted to name this blog “The Millennial Gardener” because of how we fell into gardening in the first place (and hopefully reclaim the label in my own ironic way).
Cut to early March, 2018. Justin and I are sitting on the couch in our living room, trying to work our way through a Netflix slump. I was browsing new shows with little enthusiasm, when a certain title catches my eye: Big Dreams, Small Spaces. Considering I had previously binged every other tiny house show on Netflix, I seized the opportunity to consume yet another series and pressed play.
If you haven’t watched this show before, spoiler alert: not’s not about tiny houses. It’s actually a British reality TV show that follows the UK’s Gardening God, Monty Don, around on his quest to help ameteur gardeners create the garden of their dreams.
Let’s just say, I was not the least bit disappointed.
Reality TV is one of those things that the British have gotten right (I mean, has anyone seen The Great British Baking Show? It’s perfection). And of course, Justin pretty much exclusively watches documentaries based on if the narrator is David Attenborough or not.
First episode in and I see Justin Googling “garden allotments Orlando” because that particular episode featured an ameatuer gardener with an allotment she used for beekeeping.
We found a community garden nearby, just outside of Historic downtown Sanford, FL. After reading every resource on their website (and following them on every social media channel), I emailed the president to inquire about renting a plot.
And that weekend we became the brand new gardeners of plot 10.
It wasn’t until about one month later (and many lessons learned), when I decided to write about our experience. And while “The Millennial Gardner” is probably a more accurate name for our origin story, my husband knows me well enough (like pretty much 100%) to suggest something a little more my aesthetic.
So, welcome to the writings of “The Rose Gold Gardener.”
TL;DR
My obsession with tiny houses caused us to accidentally fall in love with a British reality TV show about amateur gardeners, thus inspiring us to get off the couch and actually try gardening in real life.
